Windows XP has a feature called Prefetch. This keeps a shortcut to recently used programs. However, it can fill up with old and obsolete programs. This guide will show you how to delete said prefetch files.
Click “start”, “Run” and type in prefetch. If you did everything correct you will see this screen…

Click “OK” and you will now see this screen…
See all those files? They all can be deleted.

WARNING – Will impair performance.
The author obviously has no idea of how prefetch really works. The author has suggested a method of solving a problem that does not exist, and in so doing creating a problem that is very real. The description of prefetch above is almost entirely wrong.
Prefetch files are used to optimize both boot and application launch times. Do not deprive Windows of this valuable resource. The contents of this folder is closely monitored and controlled by Windows. There is no need or benefit in manual intervention.
