Thinking Out of the Box and Into the Fish Tank

It’s nice to see that some guys in the computer world are thinking out of the box and into the fish tank. The guys at Puget Custom Computer’s have designed and build a custom pc submerged in mineral oil. We’ve heard of computers being cooled by vegetable oil but they were all very crude looking. The vegetable oil is a dark brown and will have your room smelling like french fries before you realize it.

This setup is not only functional, it’s pretty slick looking. The mineral oil is completely non conductive and smell free. The Washington company claims the oil effectively cools system components for up to 12 hours at peak load. The blue lights and bubbles at a pretty cool effect to the overall appearance of the case.

What makes the mineral oil no conductible?
    That seems impossible.

ADD: How long would it take till you have to replace it? Will it get nasty and gooey?

The electrical parts will obviously get all “gooey” and can never be used in another project again. As long as the tank is contained it will never need an “oil change.” This method is perfect for someone who wants a unique computer and a completely silent one due to no fan noise.

The mineral oil used is not conductive.

WOW! That looks amazing! I wanna make a custom PC like that…Insane stuff…I wonder though…The internal components still work even though they’re covered in…that…oil?

  6. admin says:

Yes they still work. The oil is non conductive and it actually cools the parts by spreading out the heat.
